Arlewood La Bratta Rosso 2017
The flagship La Bratta range was inspired by the village of La Bratta in Northern Italy where Garry’s mother was born, and his grandfather and great grandfather were vignerons. The wines are a true reflection of the best fruit and blends from the vineyard and Forest Grove region.
The La Bratta Rosso displays lifted black cherry, blackcurrant and dark chocolate with spicy undertones. A complex, savoury and rich style that is medium to full bodied with a very ripe and fine tannin structure. Flavours of black cherry and underlying dark cocoa are pronounced. A long, persistent and intriguing wine that is drinking beautifully now but will reward patience.

“(Cabernet Franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon) Medium to full red to brick-red colour, a trace of purple, a savoury style of red, not so varietal, but it has some mellowness and complexity, and is very drinkable. Traces of violets, herbs and spices. Long palate. Lovely wine in a less-fruity St-Emilion style that’s a contrast to the usual Margaret River bright-fruit, cabernet sauvignon-based reds.”

Made as a medium-bodied red blend, yet it has tremendous depth and fruit concentration. The 24 months in French oak has been consumed with ease. Lots of savoury red fruits with a minerally graphite edge. I love the style as a wine that is perfect for matching with Mediterranean dishes.” 95/100
Review by James Halliday Wine Companion 2020: “Largely estate-grown on the Forest Grove Vineyard, a blend of cabernetfranc, merlot, touriga nacional and cabernet sauvignon, matured for 24 months in new and used French barriques. The wine is only light to medium-bodied, and sags somewhat under the impact of the oak and the brambly/savoury tannins – perhaps 12 months in oak might have made a better wine.” 92/100

“Deepish red colour with a tinge of purple on the rim. The bouquet is of crushed leaves, tobacco, mint and fresh herbs, as well as raspberry. Briary on the palate, intense and focussed as well as tight and firmly structured. It’s not especially fleshy or high in extract, but has intensity of flavour and lots of character. A smart, stylish red. (51% cabernet franc, 34% merlot, 9% touriga, 6% cabernet sauvignon).” 92/100

“It’s a characterful red with a layer of coffee-cream oak on a mid-weight serve of redcurrant, boysenberry and blackcurrant. Bay leaf notes provide lift and there’s an undergrowthy, slightly gamey character too, with accompanying firm/dry tannin. Oak is slightly too rich in the context of the wine but it feels like it’s all still bedding itself down; you’d imagine given another couple of years in bottle that everything will be in better harmony. But there’s no issue with the general quality here; it’s a good wine.” Rating: 92+ Points.
